"The Tour that treats the Amateur like a Pro"

ACE, PLAYOFFS TOP HARRIS TEETER SR EVENT AT BRYAN PARK

Greensboro, NC  (May 8, 2008)   Cary’s Wayne Ackley stood on the tee of the 135-yard 6th hole at the Bryan Park Players course Thursday with an 8-iron in his hand.  He took dead aim, swung, and watched the ball hit short, bounce once, and disappear into the cup.  The B Flight member of the Harris Teeter Senior Tour was no stranger to this situation, as it was his 6th career “ace”, but it marked the first time this season that any Harris Teeter member had logged a hole-in-one during Tour competition.

As is the case with any hole-in-one registered “on-Tour” during the year, Ackley will receive a free golf vacation for two to any one of 150 different resort locations throughout North America.

While Ackley’s shot was the most dramatic of the day, it certainly wasn’t the only fireworks that occurred during the event.  In the Championship Flight, 9 golfers finished their round within 1 stroke of the lead, with four players – David Williams of Cary, Durham’s Willie Hendricks, Clayton’s Gary Norris, and Pinehurst’s Chuck Taubersmith winding up in a tie for first with regulation 74s.  Williams made sure that the suspense wouldn’t last long, as he snaked in a 25-footer for birdie on the first hole of sudden-death to register the win.

The C Flight had to go an extra hole as well to determine a champion.  Greensboro’s James Yourse prevailed over Raleigh’s Joe Robertson on the first hole of the playoff to grab the flight’s top spot.

Greensboro’s Dan Whalen, a member of the Bryan Park Men’s Golf Association, put his “homecourt advantage” to good use and shot his lowest score in over 40 Tour events in the B Flight with a 78.  Whalen needed every bit of that advantage, as 2 other golfers finished just 1 stroke behind him – Wake Forest’s Warren Henderson and Burlington’s Dickie Isley.

Not to be outdone, Randy Bunn posted the lowest score of the year in the A Flight with a 71.  The Zebulon resident came into the event with a certified Tour handicap of 8.8, and bettered his personal Tour top score by 8 strokes.  Winston-Salem’s David Frye was 4 back with a 75.
